Putting an End to Mass Shootings

It only took a week into March for the US to pass a grim milestone.

On March 6th, the country surpassed 100 mass shootings. In 2021, it took until March 19th. In previous years, the country hadn’t reached that point until sometime in May.

It’s a tragedy that happens all too often, and one legislation is slow to move on, if it moves at all.

About 44% of adults in the US live in a household with a gun. About 30% of adults own one personally. Those are numbers that are set to climb steadily over the next few years with increasing worries about more mass shootings as well as rising crime.

And yet, as guns become even more popular, a growing number of people see gun violence as a problem. So, it’s clear that many Americans agree that gun violence is an issue that needs to be addressed, but there doesn’t seem to be much agreement about just how

How do we protect places like schools, stadiums, places of worship, and public spaces when the issue at the heart of the question is so divisive?

Like I said, it’s not a question that the country’s leadership seems like it’s going to be able to solve any time soon. But private companies have been coming up with solutions that hope to reduce gun violence.

Getting crime rates down, everything from robbery to mass shootings, will have to involve a concentrated effort at preventing these events in the first place.

It can start with the massive network of security cameras that watch cities and metro areas all over the country.

Places like Chicago and New York have cameras everywhere you look. The problem lies in the fact that the cameras don’t have enough people watching them to prevent crime. In fact, they are often used to review footage only after something has happened.

To stop violent crime and mass shootings, authorities need to be proactive, not reactive. The camera networks that dot our major cities can help with that.

Emerging technology that picks out faces, weapons, and vehicles connected to known criminals will be one of the biggest assets in helping to put a stop to these tragedies before they can begin.

With all of the attention that artificial intelligence has been getting lately, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it can be put to use in something like crime prevention.

That’s exactly what happened in Benito Juarez, a borough of Mexico City.

It used an AI-powered security platform to essentially create a complex surveillance network that led to a 45% decrease in crime throughout the area of more than 400,000 people in just under a year. The system allowed local law enforcement to respond quickly to crimes before they happened and increased the perception of safety among the residents from 51% to 72%.

The way it works is that the network combines a smartphone app with cameras, geolocation, police, and other assets to allow users to work together to keep their communities safe. It integrates directly into existing hardware, like security cameras, so it has a low cost of deployment. It can go anywhere from schools, to hospitals, to other public, high-traffic spaces.

So it’s easy to see how something like that would be viable in America.

The company’s CEO is a veteran with both FBI and SWAT experience and has helped implement similar systems throughout Europe. The tech behind his company has helped safeguard power plants, airports, and other key infrastructure. Now he wants to do something about the epidemic of mass shootings here in the US

It’s a problem we’ve been seeking a solution to for seemingly decades now, and this might be it.

Violent crime and mass shootings are top concerns for many, many Americans. A company that can help prevent them is poised to greatly benefit society as well as its investors.
